Catherine Scott was born around 1816. She married carpenter William Allen in December 1838 at Dundee. Occasionally the name is spelt ALLAN. They had both been born at Dundee in Scotland. Their sixth child William Allen was born 14 October 1854 at Ballarat. She was attended by Dr Stewart. Although she was the informant on the birth certificate she signed with an ‘X’ showing that she was illiterate. This couple had four other children living and one who had already died.  William died 9 January 1889 aged 72 years. His widow, Catherine died 5 June 1894 aged 80 years and 6 months. Their daughter, Mary Bathgate Allan died 27 September 1880 aged 31 years and was buried with her parents in Ballaarat Old Cemetery.
