Mary (Edwards) was born around 1835 at Dundee, Scotland. She married gold digger James Allen at Melbourne in 1853. The couple produced a daughter, Agnes Ellis, on the Ballarat Diggings on 26 August 1854. James Allen was around 27 years of age at that time.
