Jane Barrett arrived in Ballarat with her husband about the time of the Eureka riots. They lived in Bond Street before running the Argyle Hotel in Doveton Street for many years. Her obituary stated that although of a retiring disposition she was ‘charitable to a fault, and her sterling upright qualities made her a general favourite amongst her copious acquaintances’. She produced four daughters and one son, the son being a member of The Courier staff at the time of her death. Jane Barrett passed away on the 15 September 1915 at her daughter’s residence in Toorak.
